How do you keep your personal information safe when using public Wi-Fi?

I always clean out the browser when using public computers if it's possible. Does anyone not know how? It's a very vital skill these days.

What clues help you spot a fake or malicious website?

I have a good eye for seeing fake stuff. Well, I'm very sure what the real URL is, so I just don't fall for it.

What steps do you take to secure your online accounts?

As I've mentioned before, 2FA and strong passwords protects my banking and employment stuff, while strong passwords alone protect my forum and blog accounts.

    Your Phone Destroyed by Virus

My phone's capabilities to call and text were destroyed by some text message I opened. This happened a few years ago. Has anyone had something similar happen? Were you able to get your phone back? I could not.

Which antivirus or security software do you trust for protecting your devices?

I'm not using any right now for my PC. In the past, I used Avast and Webroot a lot. My impression of them was good. I especially liked the Avast boot scan. It was good for those deep viruses.

How do you stay safe from online scams?

I don't have any tips, but I have a good "common sense" about spotting them. I can't really explain it.

How do you monitor your credit report for signs of fraud?

I did sign up for CreditSaint.com, but I had to stop. I'd like to sign back on. Anyway, I'm probably at least 5,000 in debt and I need it cleared up so I can borrow money again.

How do you handle suspicious phone calls or voice phishing (vishing) attempts?

This happened to me. Perhaps I already mentioned it. Some people impersonated my auto insurance company on the phone demanding something like $300. Luckily, I never paid and called my real company. Anyway, my only strategy to block these bozos is just phone blocking as much as possible.

    Forum and Blog Hacking

Yeah, I need to get 2FA for it, but I'm not sure if my premium service has it. Does anyone know if inbox.org has it? But, anyway, I use super-strong passwords on all admin and user accounts on email, forums, blogs etc..

How do you protect your mobile devices from being hacked or stolen?

My phone is a very cheap Wal Mart brand, but I'm sure similar security exists for it. Anyone else have cheaper phones? How do you protect them?

Do you use a password manager? Which one and why?

I don't use them. I just remember slight variations on a very strong password I memorized.

How do you protect your mobile devices from being hacked or stolen?

There's really nothing, so I have to immediately change banking info to a new phone when it's lost or stolen. I had to do this recently when I lost my phone.

Have you ever experienced identity theft? What lessons did you learn?

As I mentioned in another post, hackers impersonated my insurance company demanding money. I almost fell for it, but I decided to check with the real company, and finally, I phone blocked the scammers. But how do these scammers get my info to begin with? Is the company even in on it? I mean...

    Review Scams

Reviews are the way to get business on Fiverr, Wyzant (academic tutoring) and other places, but how do we know people aren't just buying reviews and especially, good ones? Note: a mix of good and bad ones might exist to cover-up the scam.

How do you verify the legitimacy of online job offers or remote work opportunities?

I would do tons of research with Better Business Bureau and other places. And If I was dealing with individuals, not companies, I would need to see strong reviews particularly, but note that reviews can also be a scam

    Forum and Blog Hacking

I should at least use 2FA with email for admin accounts for forums and blogs. I did that one time, it wasn't a big deal. But nobody would be interested in hacking my forums except from being fueled by hate. There's no money like in a bank etc..

What has been your go-to for forum spam prevention?

I'm not saying other methods than what I like don't work, though. I simply don't like the style of other methods.

    Marriage Scams

This is actually a plot to one of Tyler Perry's movies, but seriously, I'm sure it's a real problem. It's when some dream guy cons a girl (or maybe some dream girl cons a guy) just to get the cash and then runs or devilishly says something like "I got you in my corner pocket, lol".

    Forum and Blog Hacking

I don't use 2FA because it makes it too much a pain for me to get in. However, though, I do use very strong passwords. Do you figure that's enough? Anyway, though, in regard to banking, there is a lot of 2FA, though and that's good. Things are often run thru my mobile phone.

Giving Out Your Routing and Account Number Too Much

What might be the danger in this? Well, I'm guessing identity theft and unauthorized withdrawals would be a problem. Anyway, I'm thinking of checking with my bank to make sure withdrawals from bad places don't come up.
